    Aegean 600, Zoulou sets a new record but one team suffers tragic loss

    The 4th edition of the AEGEAN 600 got off to a picture-perfect start yesterday, with all boats in the fleet getting a fast start to their 605-mile journey around the islands of the Aegean. Routing solutions for both the fastest monohulls and fastest multihulls pointed towards new course records, and these teams battled through last night and today in all that this race course could throw at them: from Meltemi winds accelerated to over 40 knots in the island channels followed by near-calms in the island lees.

    The 25th edition of the Trofeo S.M. La Reina and the 36th edition of the Copa Almirante Marcial Sánchez-Barcáiztegui, alongside the ORC Sportboat European Championship 2024, hosted from June 28 to July 7 by the Real Club Náutico de Valencia (RCNV) in cooperation with the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC), culminated in celebrating the champions today.

    Spectacular 15-25 knot conditions today helped get this year’s fleet of the AEGEAN 600 off to a fast and furious start to their 605-mile tour of the beautiful Aegean islands. These perfect conditions in this 4th edition of the race organized by the Hellenic Ocean Racing Club (HORC) are suitable to threaten course records in both the Monohull and Multihull divisions.

    Whilst the two leaders of the New York Vendée Les Sables d’Olonne, Charlie Dalin (MACIF Santé et Prevoyance) and Germany’s Boris Herrmann (Malizia Seaexplorer) might be feeling quite isolated today as they passed their theoretical half way point of the solo Transatlantic course from North America to the French Atlantic coast, the very opposite is true for the two main groups which are valiantly pursuing them some at more than 400 miles behind the French leader.

    Around 242 yachts, including eight in the ‘IRC Over 60’ maxi class and three more maxis in the ORC class, will set sail tomorrow at 1400 from Livorno to Punta Ala on the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar. This event is the fourth in the International Maxi Association’s 2023-24 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge, which began with last year’s Rolex Middle Sea Race and will conclude with August’s Palermo-Montecarlo.

    It’s Peter Karrie’s Nefeli who takes the honor of winning the traditional Marina Portoroz Melges 24 Regatta, the second event of the 2024 Melges 24 European Sailing Series organized by Yacht Club Marina Portoroz in collaboration with the International Melges 24 Class Association. Impressive second place for the youth team of Strambapapa with Leonardo Centouri at the helm, awarded as the best Corinthian team in Portoroz the weekend of May 10-12.

    The Act 1 of the 69F Youth Foiling Gold Cup is ready to celebrate it's opening day at Circolo Vela Torbole, where five international mixed gender teams composed by Under 25 sailors are gathered, waiting for the moment to compete for the first points of a season which will be articulated into three events. Actually, after Torbole, the young guns of the 69F Class will be again on the water in Malcesine (17-23 June) and Acquafresca (15-21 July).

    44Cup, Switzerland’s day in the sun

    History was made on the 44Cup today when, for the first time, a team representing land-locked Switzerland was top scoring boat of the day. Admittedly this came after an awkward one race day, but victory in this for Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team is indicative of the Swiss team’s forward motion in the hotly competitive owner-driver one design class.
