A second day of 7-10 knot southeasterly onshore breeze concluded the 44Cup racing off Puntaldia in northeast Sardinia with yet another high scoring day; every race seemingly bringing a change of fortune. Generally across the fleet the event was one of the closest in 44Cup history the winner averaging 4.333 points per race compared to the ninth-placed boat’s 6.5.

John Bassadone’s Peninsula Racing came out on top at the conclusion today of the 44Cup Calero Marinas in Lanzarote. They won by five points from the newest team, Markus Törnqvist's GeMera Racing, in turn tied on points with, and winning on countback from, RC44 veterans Team Aqua of RC44 class president Chris Bake. Peninsula Racing has been competing on the 44Cup since 2010 and while enjoying success early on, including winning the RC44 World Championship in 2012, today’s victory was their first in a 44Cup event since 2017 (when they also won here in Lanzarote).

After three days of 15 knot winds building to 20+, the final day of the 44Cup Marina Jandía instead began in a brutal 25+ knots but ended in 8 knots, keeping the RC44 teams busy with sails and settings adjustments for the season’s final three races. This week conditions off the south of Fuerteventura have been some of the best of the season for the high performance owner driver one designs with supreme surfing conditions provided by the Atlantic waves.

- For day two of the 44Cup World Championship the nine RC44 teams ventured out from the host village of Brunnen on to the Urnersee section of Lake Uri [Lucerne] to a full windless, glass-out. After two hours of waiting patiently and a move of the race course north, the wind did finally fill in with a brisk 15 knots enabling two raced to be completed. After a further delay a third race was eventually started but abandoned at the leeward gate as the wind turned inside out. The fleet was then sent home.

Torbjörn Törnqvist’s Artemis Racing demonstrated herself to be categorically back on form after winning five races out of nine at the 44Cup Baiona. The second event of the 2024 44Cup concluded today in the Galician port where it has been hosted by the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona (MRCYB).

History was made on the 44Cup today when, for the first time, a team representing land-locked Switzerland was top scoring boat of the day. Admittedly this came after an awkward one race day, but victory in this for Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team is indicative of the Swiss team’s forward motion in the hotly competitive owner-driver one design class.

Alongside names such as Bake, Lah and Törnqvist, one of the cornerstones of the RC44 has been Caleros. After stints in the IMS 500 and GP42 grand prix classes, Lanzarote’s Calero family was lured by Russell Coutts into joining his fledgling high performance owner-driver RC44 class for its second season in 2008. But far from merely having their own team, the Caleros are also one of the leading marina operators in the Canary Islands. As a result their Puerto Calero marina on Lanzarote featured on the RC44 calendar annually from 2008 to 2013, including the first all-important RC44 World Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

In form typical of the high performance owner-drive one design, going into the final race of the final day of the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina, just two points separated the top four boats and, with nine points on the table, mathematically any of the top six could still win. Added to this was the venue with a third day of racing from a third direction – the east, blowing across La Linea.

The Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes and the Solent laid on a World Championship worthy of the leading owner-driver one design class, the RC44. Over four days, the nine teams enjoyed top of the range conditions, plus the usual complexities of British tides and fast moving weather systems.

With rollmops unfurling in the big breeze, the decision was made to cancel the final day of racing at the 44Cup Marstrand. Despite this, over the last four days eight races were held and a worthy winner found in Nico Poons’ Charisma, defending champion of the 44Cup’s Swedish stopover as well as being 2022’s 44Cup overall winner.

In another step towards re-energising the 44Cup, the rules for the International RC44 One Design class have been revised for 2023 so that going into the 44Cup Oman, which starts out of Muscat’s Al Mouj marina tomorrow, all nine teams will race with at least one female crew.
