Emirates Team New Zealand designers are getting in a lot of time on the water as they work towards completing the design for the team’s second AC72. The pressure’s on to learn a lot very quickly from Boat 1.
Emirates Team New Zealand’s second AC72 cat will be launched early next year and the pressure’s on the designers to learn as much as possible from the first boat in the shortest possible time.
With Boat 1 barely in the water – today was only the sixth day of sailing since its launch on July 21 – the designers are under pressure to learn a lot very quickly.
As head of the Emirates Team New Zealand design group Nick Holroyd is ultimately responsible for getting drawings to the builder.
“It puts massive premium on the sailing time,” Holroyd said. “The pressure’s also high to get Boat 1 sailing consistently so that the sailing team can get the race training they need to do.”
“For the design team the aim is to get as much value out of sailing Boat 1, turn the data around very quickly and load it into Boat 2.”
